y partner really like the Santa Claus illustration I did for "The Fruitcake Song" animation so we used it for our resort's 2011 Christmas card.

He also made ornaments to sell in our gift shop.

I also made a canvas print out of all of the art from that piece.

y parent's asked me to illustrate & animate their 2011 Christmas eCard. In order to come up with a concept, I started listening to some Christmas music. Out of several options, I finally decided on "The Fruitcake Song" by Mannheim Steamroller. It was upbeat and I could really visualize some whimsical, Dr. Seuss inspired, classic artwork. Now, their actual eCard read, "Merry Christmas from Jim & Ginny" but, for my portfolio version, I changed it to read the song title and artist.

was commissioned to do a holiday eCard for Virtual Marketing Partners for the 2011 season. They provided me with the concept and audio. I provided them with a storyboard including character designs. I inked, colored and animated this piece in Adobe Flash.

So, last week I introduced my first Cutable SVG file and I got some great feedback. I've made some adjustments to this week's freebie, some sassy slingback heels, to make cutting and piecing the artwork together much easier.

Here's another short :46 second musical animation demonstrating the piecing process. You'll notice how the bows are separate from the shoes. That is so you have the option to add dimension to the bows by adhering a foam tab to the back of those pieces. Watch it here!

For those cutting, you'll get the SVG file of these cute shoes. And, for those coloring, you'll get a digi-stamp version of the shoes which is a BW (black & white) PNG file!

I'm SUPER excited this week because I'm introducing "Cutable SVGs" plus my first Video Tutorial. If you use a cutting machine, then I would LOVE your feedback on this freebie and the new & improved SVG file.

I have to mention that this week's freebie is an adorable elephant, suggested by my 8-year old niece, Adeline.

"Cutable SVGs" are my artwork in SVG file format! Yes, I have been offering SVG files in the past, but recently I learned how to layer them specifically for using cutting machines. Below are three examples of the ENDLESS creative possibilities using this cute cutable.

The cutting maching software I use (and prefer) is Make-The-Cut. Below is a screenshot of the elephant SVG file inside the software. You can see the artwork is layered and broken apart. In the download, I've also included the Make-The-Cut file for MTC users.

Notice how the foot is separate. That is so you have the option to add dimension to the front foot by adhering a foam tab to the back of that piece. I've put together this short :46 second musical animation to demonstrate how this polka dotted elephant was created! It explains why the foot isn't attached. Watch it... it's cute!

A First For Me

Well, I'm super excited to share a first for me with you. I've recently been introduced to the world of digital scrapbooking and card making. This is exciting for me because it's an avenue for my artwork that I had never thought about but is rather perfect for me. And today is the first time I got to see my artwork used by another artist to create some fine art. I can't express the joy it makes me feel. I'm so happy. It inspires me to create more artwork that makes others feel this happy. Thanks to Cheryl for being my first! Hearts & Gears

I love all things cute but I also like to make them a little quirky too, hence mixing the hearts with some gears in a very metalic looking pattern. I've met some new friends recently that are introducing me to the world of digital scrapbooking and craft card making so I'm starting to work on making my patterns available for digital downloads. Trunk Bay

This is a piece I did quite a few years ago but just stumbled across it in my portfolio and realized I really liked it and should make it available as a print. This was inspired by one of my favorite beaches, Trunk Bay, located in the Virgin Islands. In the mid-90's I was a dancer for Carnival Cruise Lines and got to go to all sorts of tropical locations. Sitting here in Michigan, I wish I was there now! I had such a great time as a cruise ship dancer. I met great people and had a great time. I worked cruise ships from the age of 19 to 23. I've included one of my cast photos from the Carnival ship, the MS Celebration, which Carnival no longer owns. The cast photo was taken in 1995. I'm the guy on the far left.

Over at the ColourLovers' Blog I found a post about a contest to "Be the next Michael Miller Fabrics' License Designer". So I dug a litte deaper and that's where I learned about SpoonFlower which is a site that makes it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric designs. Spyro, the Dragon - Fan Art

I was asked by some folks on Newgrounds.com to collaborate on a video game piece that displayed fan art of your favorite video game character. I said yes so I did this illustration of Spyro the Dragon, my favorite video game back in the 90s. This character is fan art. Fan art is my interpretation of an existing character. The original character is copyright Sony, Playstation and Universal. I've included the inked outline and the original game cover.

Stir The Waters

Let's stir the waters a bit and see what pops up! This shark is doing a little water stirring of his own. The word of the week for Illustration Friday is "stir". The final piece is the textured version. For those curious to see my process I've also included the non-textured version, the first shark I illustrated before I decided I wanted it to have a more cartoon-stylized look, and also the inked version before coloring. And finally, I did a short animation because I wanted to see him really come to life.

3 Animated Broadcast Commercials

SafeTouch Security hired me to do three Flash animated commercials. It started with a script provided to me and the audio file. I created the character and background designs, then provided storyboards, then animtics. The animatic follows the storyboard and gives a better idea of how the scene will look and feel with motion and timing. At its simplest, an animatic is a series of still images edited together and displayed in sequence. More commonly, a rough dialogue and/or rough sound track is added to the sequence of still images taken from the storyboard to test whether the sound and images are working effectively together. Finally, I inked and colored the elements and animated them in Flash. They were exported in Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 7.0.

My partner, Dave, and I run a 4-cabin vacation rental on Tee Lake in Lewiston, Michigan. When I moved up here, I was introduced to morel mushrooms. They're a delicacy. Many people come up to mushroom hunt in May. So, I illustrated this flyer to advertise in town to drum up some business for the resort this spring. Well, Hello Kitty!

Seems like we have a new family member now. She chose us. A few days ago I was making my morning tea when I heard a persistent "meow". I looked out the frozen window and saw this kitten. Next to the meowing kitten was one of our dog's empty food bowl. I knew right away that Dave must have also heard the kitty, and then fed it. Uh oh... Long story short, since the local pet rescue is no longer accepting cats, and since this little girl is SO friendly, we're going to keep her. But she's an outside cat since I'm allergic. We'll do our best to keep you warm this winter, little Macy.

This drawing I had already inked so it doesn't look like the kitten we have. I colored the illustration today. Below is the real kitty.

I imagine, like me, a few other artists will most likey draw bees for this week's Illustration Friday word, "swarm". This swarm of bees might have the wrong beehive. But I think it makes this hairdo come alive!

Raggedy Ann and Andy's Camel

When I was a kid I loved Bobbs-Merrill's 1977 movie, "Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure". This is my first fan art piece and I'm so glad it's of "The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees" who is one of my favorite childhood characters. Since I inked & colored it in Flash CS3, I decided to animate him a little to bring him to life. I added music from the movie. You can see the animated version at my deviantArt page here.

This is a commissioned illustration I did for a new social networking company called Barkles. It's a place to share your opinions and get rewarded. The site is launching soon and this illustration is for their 503 error page. It's the page that tells the user that the web site's server is simply not available at the moment. This is usually due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. So their idea was to have their mascot tearing the page to expose the server. They were pleased with the final, as was I. And since this had me busy I decided to also submit it for my Illustration Friday drawing for this week. A little double-duty here. The word this week is "layer". Barkles is pulling back a layer.

Tee Lake Resort - Tshirt Design

My partner & I took over his parent's four-cabin resort on Tee Lake in Lewiston, Michigan last spring. We moved from Florida and it's been quite a journey. Hunk in Retro Trunks

I'm going to be doing some super hero character designs for a client soon so I thought I'd get a head start and do some study drawings of the muscle man physique. So, I picked a picture and just drew it as is. Then I put the photo aside and looked at my drawing for inspiration to draw the cartoon version. I liked my cartoon version and decided to ink & color him.

Flipping through an old magazine to find something to sketch as a warm-up, I came across this carpenter. So I sketched him out as realistically as possible. Then I decided to re-draw him in a more simplified cartoon version. I was happy with the outcome and decided to ink & color it. This didn't take me too long and was a fun exercise.

Surrender Dorothy

When I think of the word "Surrender" I immediately think of of one of my favorite movies, The Wizard of Oz, and the time the Wicked Witch of the West did a little HILARIOUS skywriting on her broom! So when Illustration Friday announced the word "surrender", I knew exactly what I was going to do. In fact, oddly enough, it's actually something I've wanted to do for awhile but just never got around to it. Until now!
I always try to include my sketches. This sketch of the layout is of the piece as I saw it originally in my head. It's just a quick sketch to get the basic composition down so I could refer to it later. Then I found some photos online of Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West and did some real life sketches in order to establish in my mind the look and feel for the soon-to-be cartoon version I wanted to create.
The final sketch I scanned and brought into Flash to ink & color. You can see some of my notes to myself. I knew it would be easier to make those adjustments in the computer rather than erase lines and re-draw. You can see the broom needles needed to be shorted and I wanted her right foot moved to the left more.

Simplify Exercise

This is an excercise I did this morning trying to simplify from real life. The first image is an advert in a magazine. The second image is my attempt at sketching it realistically. The third is my 1st attempt at simplifying my "realistic" sketch. The fourth is my 2nd attempt at cartoon-izing the hand. And the final image was inked and colored in Flash CS3. Overall, I'm happy with the result and it was great practice.

I woke up this morning and opened my eyes to see a shadows and lights reflecting off a glass plate I have in my house. I was dazed and confused. It looked just like a monster. I jumped out of bed to grab my pencil and paper to sketch it before the vision left my head. I scared my partner when I did that. Poltergeist Clown

My partner puts on a haunted house every Halloween. This year I made a video trailer for the website and I got the idea to illustrate this scene of the clown from the movie Poltergeist laying on top of the TV that plays the trailer. Check it out at www.goreNmore.com

This is a quick ink sketch I did freehand while looking through the 2008 13th Hour Magazine. It's a monster designed by a company called Creature Feature. On New Year's Eve we made some noise-makers out of paper plates and popcorn kernels. (Thanks for the idea the Today Show!) So I drew Po, the Kungfu Panda on mine for my second cousin, Jamison. He's 4-years old. Scadoosh! It's just in Crayola marker and it appears a splash of champagne got on it. LOL. And finally, these are some practice bird drawings.

Here are some sketches. I was snacking on nuts. Then, I drew this bee off of the deck of cards I was playing with. The one with the crab looks weird because I sketched it from a toy crab. It's one of those that you put in water and it grows. And last but not least, my dog, Madison. She was looking so cute on "pride couch". It's her little "pride rock" from Lion King.
